Hidradenitis Suppurativa is a chronic disease that affects mostly women, and that typically manifests in one’s early twenties. In my case, this was exactly what happened and I would like to share my story with you to both explain the best Hidradenitis Suppurativa diet treatment I have found and also give you a general overview of managing this awful condition.
Hidradenitis Suppurativa or HS is effectively an autoimmune disease where our bodies are fighting a chemical or allergy that it wants to eliminate. So often, people find themselves at their doctor’s surgery or specialist’s office, looking for the most complex solutions using modern medicine. So many people typically overlook the most important issue- managing their diet and controlling their food intake.
As a woman who has learned to manage this condition, to the point that I am able to be pain free, lesion and boil free and generally able to live my life as I want is truly a gift. The solution did not come easily to me as I tried the traditional medical science route and found that it was not helping. I decided to then take a specific and detailed self analysis of my diet and started from ground zero.
I effectively took full responsibility for my body and everything that I put into it. My research was about finding other women who had been through similar problems and the ways they found to deal with and fix the HS symptoms in their lives. Time and time again, the solution always seemed to be the types of food they ate.
Armed with this knowledge, I decided to start only drinking water and eating as many green leafy vegetables as possible. For the first two weeks, I eliminated all meat and lived on cabbage, lettuce, apples, and gradually started eating other vegetables day by day. I found my symptoms had started to reduce and that as an added bonus, I was starting to feel less stressed as well.
It was hard for me to eliminate coffee initially as I have always enjoyed a daily coffee but was determined to sort this out. While there is always a place for modern medicine, it came down to starting from the most basic self assessment and after the first two weeks, was feeling very much better.
I then tried eating potatoes, as they used to be a favorite of mine and it seemed like all my efforts had then been undone.
I immediately stopped eating potatoes the next day after my symptoms returned and changed nothing else. The symptoms began to reduce again, so it became clear that potatoes for me were off the menu. I followed this process of eating a very bland, green vegetable diet and slowly adding other fruits and vegetables, to see if they worked, or caused flare up is my HS symptoms. Once the offending foods were found, they were taken off my diet permanently.
I want to be clear that this process will take you some time. It is not a once off process, but a lifelong one- by first finding the foods that don’t work for you, and then sticking with the ones that do work for you. I miss my sweet treats, like chocolate and sugar, but have managed to put one of the most debilitating and chronic diseases behind me. I know it will always have the potential to flare up, but by introducing only organic, grain fed meat in my third month, and drinking many blended green vegetable juices as well as at least two litres of water a day, to flush any toxins out of my body, I am feeling much better and more alive than I have in years.
After my diet transformation, to help me control my Hidradenitis Suppurativa, I am convinced that other people who are disciplined and determined to overcome this scourge, will see success by following my recommendation. I will never tell you that it is easy or that the process is quick, but to get your life back and feel pain and boil free, every ounce of effort is worth it.
